Rustenburg - An earthquake felt in various parts of the country on Tuesday was the worst in recent Potchefstroom history, a North West University professor said.

“In my 23 years in Potchefstroom this was the worst tremor. Doors and windows rattled,” said Professor Johannes Froneman of the University's Potchefstroom campus.

He said the tremor lasted less than a minute and no damage was reported.

“When it started a repair man was stepping on his ladder to repair an air conditioner in the office. He had such a fright he stepped off.

“I looked at the ceiling 1/8and 3/8 prepared to take cover under my desk,” he said.

In Ventersdorp about 55km from Potchefstroom, resident Solomon Mere said he was at work when they heard a heavy strange sound approaching.

“It was as if something heavy was coming. We left our office and rushed to the street to see it. We could not see anything and suddenly the earth vibrated under our feet,” he said.

“The vibration lasted for about ten seconds. I was so shocked.”
