Johannesburg - Two people died and one person was critically injured when a truck and car collided at the R31 and N12 intersection in Kimberley, Northern Cape, paramedics said on Saturday

The three were occupants in the car, said ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak.

“At approximately 10.30pm (on Friday) paramedics from ER24 arrived on the scene where they found the horrific collision where a truck collided into the passenger side of the car at the intersection,” he said.

“Upon further assessment they found that one person was killed on impact and two others were in a critical condition.”

Paramedics called on the fire and rescue services to assist people trapped in wreckage.

Once freed, paramedics assessed their injuries and found they needed to act quickly and took the injured to a nearby hospital.

“Sadly one of the occupants died shortly after arrival at hospital,” said Vermaak.

“It is understood that one of the occupants still remains in a critical condition in intensive care.”

The driver of the truck was not injured in the accident.

The cause of the accident was unknown.

Police were investigating.
