Johannesburg -

Private cars will not be allowed “anywhere near” FNB Stadium where the memorial service for former president Nelson Mandela will be held on Tuesday, Johannesburg metro police said.

Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said on Sunday that roads in the vicinity of the stadium would be closed from midnight on Monday.

The affected roads include Nasrec Road, Soweto Highway and Rand Show Road.

“Because of the road closures, people are encouraged to make use of public transport,” Minnaar said.

Trains would operate from 5am from Vereeniging, Naledi, Leralla in Tembisa, Daveyton, Khwezi in Soweto and Springs.

“Buses will also operate from Soweto, and there will also be Gautrain feeder buses from Rosebank and Sandton stations that will transport dignitaries to the Wanderers park and ride facility.

“There will also be park and ride from Constitution Hill in Braamfontein, Westgate, Gold Reef City, Wits University, the Metro Centre in Braamfontein and Thuso House in Braamfontein,” Minnaar said.

The roads will be re-opened after the memorial service. - Sapa
