An unknown number of men robbed an SBV cash-in-transit vehicle of an undisclosed amount of cash in Witbank, Mpumalanga police said on Tuesday.

Captain Leonard Hlathi said the security guards had finished collecting money from an SBV storeroom on Monday around 6:30pm to take to a Fidelity drop-off point.

When they drove away, a black BMW 3-series, with police registration and a blue light, drove in front of their vehicle.

The cash-in-transit van collided with the BMW and the guards thought they had crashed into a police car.

Several men jumped out of the BMW and pointed handguns and rifles at the security guards.

The guards were forced to get out of their vehicle at gunpoint before the men stole an undisclosed amount of cash.

The men fled in a different black BMW which also had police registration and a blue light.

The BMW that was recovered from the scene had reportedly been stolen during a house robbery in Witbank in October last year.

No one was injured and no arrests have been made.

A case of armed robbery was being investigated.
