Kathmandu - One of the South Africans who had been stranded in the mountains of Nepal following the recent earthquake was experienced mountaineer Sarah Khumalo who was airlifted and taken to safety on Tuesday.

“When the earthquake happened we did not realise it was real,” said Khumalo.

Khumalo, who has summited Mt Kilimanjaro and Mt Elbrus in Russia, arrived at disaster relief organisation Gift of the Givers base camp in Kathmandu on Tuesday.

After beginning her attempt on Mount Everest in early April, Khumalo was stranded on the mountain and left without shelter for two nights.

But Khumalo said she would again attempt to reach the summit.

“I can’t tell you when I will try again but this won’t stop me reaching the summit for good,” she said.

Khumalo added she hoped climbers would soon return to Nepal.

“This country depends on tourism so I hope other climbers will return soon”.
