Durban -

Inkatha Freedom Party leader Mangosuthu Buthelezi urged South Africans on Friday to uphold Nelson Mandela's legacy.

“May the Lord comfort us all and help us to uphold the memory of South Africa's most beloved leader,” he said in a statement paying tribute to Mandela.

“The grief of a nation is palpable. The last few months have been difficult, as we awaited news about Madiba's health and prayed for strength for the Mandela family.”

He said all people were mourning Mandela and his sympathy went out to those closest to him.

“So many knew and loved him... There will surely be many tears shed in the coming days in all corners of our country, and across the world.”

He described Mandela as “a close friend, an inspired leader, and a complex character”.

He said he and his wife sent their condolences to the Mandela family. - Sapa
