Stellenbosch - The man who made history by having the first penis transplant is making history again.
The 21-year-old man, who lost his penis due toi a botched circumcision, has reportedly fathered a child with his girlfriend.
According to News24, Stellenbosch University urologist Professor Andre van der Merwe made the announcement at a public lecture on Thursday.
A series of these talks are scheduled where researchers at the university will discuss their work “in layman's terms”.
This, Van der Merwe reportedly told News24, confirms the surgery, performed at Tygerberg Hospital last year, was sucessful and “the organ is functioning”.
The team who performed the nine-hour micro surgery is keeping the man under observation, reportedly to check for possible improvements in future operations, which could take place as early as mid-August.
