Cape Town - Despite an increased traffic policing presence as hundreds of holiday-makers returned from school holidays, nine people died on the province’s roads at the weekend.

Provincial traffic Chief Kenny Africa said the roads were busier around 5pm on Sunday.

“We were expecting it to be busier on Sir Lowry’s Pass, the Du Toitskloof Pass near the Huguenot Tunnel and also the West Coast roads.”

He said while there were no active operations on Sunday, police and traffic officials maintained patrols to “make sure people got back safely”.

Among the nine that were killed was a driver, a motorcyclist and pedestrians, and the crashes occurred in various parts of the province like Wellington, Touws River and Paarl.

The crash in Touws River involved a bus and one light motor vehicle. Two people died and eight sustained minor injuries.

Meanwhile traffic operations on Friday and Saturday resulted in eight people being arrested for false documentation, drunken driving and excessive speeding.

The highest speed recorded was 154km/h in a 100km/h zone.
