Cape Town - The body of a woman who drowned while trying to rescue her son and other children from the strong-running Berg River in Paarl has been found, Western Cape police said on Monday.

“Police divers in concert with metro divers attended to the scene and the body of the mother was recovered at approximately 6pm (n Sunday),” Colonel Tembinkosi Kinana said.

“An inquest is being investigated.”

Police responded around 4pm on Sunday to a reported drowning at Long Street bridge in Paarl.

“Four children between the ages of 12 and 13 are alleged to have been swimming in the river, when they got into (difficulties),” Kinana said.

Two of the children managed to reach the river bank but two other boys were still in danger of drowning.

Apparently the mother of one of the boys drowned while trying to rescue the children.

“The two boys were subsequently rescued,” Kinana said.

On Sunday, ER24 spokesman Werner Vermaak said the children were transported to Paarl Provincial Hospital for treatment. - Sapa
