Cape Town - Stellenbosch University vice-chancellor Professor Russel Botman has been posthumously awarded an honorary doctorate from the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, which was conferred by Camilla, the Duchess of Cornwall.
Botman’s widow, Beryl, accepted the degree on his behalf and at Tuesday’s ceremony read the graduation speech her husband, who died on June 27, had prepared. He was awarded the degree Doctor of Laws.
Camilla, who is referred to as the Duchess of Rothesay in Scotland, is the chancellor of the University of Aberdeen.
Professor Sir Ian Diamond, principal and vice-chancellor of the university, said knowing Botman had been an honour and a privilege.
“Professor Botman has cemented a close relationship between our university and Stellenbosch, of which this honorary degree is symbolic. We are deeply honoured and moved that his wife, Beryl, and daughter, Roxanne, have made the journey from South Africa to be with us this week and to accept this honour on his behalf.”
Meanwhile, a mini-football field in Stellenbosch was opened in honour of Botman on Tuesday.
The solar-powered artificial grass field was opened by the Dutch Minister of Foreign Trade and Development Co-operation, Lilianne Ploumen.
According to the university, Botman was the driving force behind the development of soccer at the institution.
