Road rehabilitation work has started on Route 43 between Worcester and Wyzersdrift, said the Western Cape transport and public works department on Thursday.

Constructors have already started road rehabilitation work on a road located on Route 43 in the Western Cape, between Worcester and Wyzersdrift. This road is Main Road 298, that was identified for much needed rehabilitation work in 2014.

“The project will include the widening of the Breede River Bridge and the repair of other structures along the section of the road,” said departmental spokesman Byron la Hoe.

The project is expected to cost R227 million and to be completed in 2017.

“Two-way traffic will be maintained at all times in the urban area of Rawsonville, with safe pedestrian access to businesses,” said la Hoe. “There will be half-width construction in other areas with stop/go operations during the day and a traffic light system at night.”

La Hoe said that motorists travelling along the route should expect possible delays, especially during bad weather.

Speaking about the economic impact of the project, La Hoe said the scope of the project, which will require as many as 50 000 person days, would create much needed employment opportunities and job creation for people located within the boundaries of the Breede Valley region.

“Thirty percent of the contract value is expected to go towards targeted enterprises within the Cape Winelands district municipality,” he said.
