Cape Town - Nine pedestrians and three other road users died on Western Cape roads over the weekend, said the province’s Transport and Public Works department on Monday.

“Provincial Traffic Services stopped a total of 3 039 vehicles in 26 alcohol blitz roadblocks across the Western Cape. Twelve road users, including nine pedestrians, died on the province’s roads this weekend,” said departmental spokesperson Byron la Hoe.

La Hoe was reporting on the results of the weekend’s provincial traffic services traffic operations.

The 12 road fatalities were across the province in areas including the greater Cape Metropole where there were seven fatalities, the Winelands where a cyclist was killed, the West Coast, and the Central Karoo.

Breathalyser tests and speed screenings were also conducted in the weekend’s operations. Nearly 2 000 drivers were tested to determine if they were under the influence of alcohol which lead to 18 arrests.

The highest breath alcohol reading was recorded in Mossel Bay, at 1.15mg/1 000ml, which is four times the legal limit of 0,24mg/1 000ml.

217 speeding offences were recorded with the highest speed in Brackenfell at 172km/h.

A further two arrests were also made, both for false documentation.
