Cape Town - The Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) chose to celebrate its 12-year anniversary by donating R12 000 each to 12 Cape Town NGOs providing support services for the elderly, the homeless, orphans and at-risk youth.

During a handover ceremony at the CTICC on Tuesday, Beautiful Gate South Africa’s Tino Tadokera said the funds were a valuable contribution to the community programmes his organisation undertakes. “It helps continue providing a service. It feeds into the pool of funds to contribute to the running cost of the programmes in Philippi and Khayelitsha.”

Sen’en Inns from the Home of Hope NGO in Table View said the money would help run cluster homes for orphaned and homeless children.

“We just bought a big house. This contribution would help pay for the shortfall of the house and its renovations,” she said.

Norah Comanatha from the iKhaya le Themba feeding scheme said the donation would be used to buy supplies to feed the underprivileged.

The Zip Zap Circus School’s Natasha Meyer said the money from the CTICC would be invested in the training programmes her organisation runs to teach at-risk children skills. “The school helps kids with HIV as well. The organisation helps kids develop and makes them more employable.”

Over the past 12 years, the CTICC has plugged in more than R25 billion into the country’s Gross Domestic Product with R22bn of that amount contributing to the provincial economy.

Chief executive Julie-May Ellingson said: “We are proud to say that the CTICC has created and sustained in excess of 83 000 jobs since its inception.”

The centre has hosted over 500 big events, including the World Economic Forum on Africa.
