Cape Town - A cyclist was killed in a hit-and-run on Monday night.

Richard Bosman, the executive director of Safety and Security, confirmed a male cyclist had been knocked down near Durbanville.

A witness told the Cape Argus on Monday night shortly after 6pm: “The man was lying on his back, diagonally in the road. His head was covered and his bicycle was lying about 8m away on the shoulder of the road, in absolute shreds.

“The helmet was lying in the opposite lane, well away from the man.”

In a separate accident a cyclist was injured when he was knocked down on the R27, Porterfield Road in Table View.

City of Cape Town Traffic Services spokesman Richard Coleman said the incident occurred at 7.50am on Monday.

“A car knocked him down and he suffered slight injuries.”

Another cyclist was seriously injured last month. Alriza Reid was training for the Double Century with the City Cycling Club in Llandudno on September 28 when she was struck by a car at the turn-off to Llandudno. She suffered a broken jaw, and is in Groote Schuur’s Intensive Care Unit.

Motorist Raymond Evans has appeared in the Wynberg Magistrate’s Court.

He faces a charge of driving under the influence with an alternative charge of reckless and negligent driving and a second charge of failure to stop and ascertain Reid’s injuries after he allegedly drove away from the scene.

Meanwhile, the N1 was closed to incoming traffic for several hours on Monday after a person died in an accident involving a truck and two other vehicles.

Coleman said the “serious accident” occurred at around 10.28am.

“There was one fatality in a serious accident involving a truck, a BMW and a bakkie on the N1 incoming. Traffic had to be diverted as all lanes were closed,” he said.
