Cape Town - Four people were killed, and several others seriously injured, after a bus and a truck collided on the N1 just 2km outside of Laingsburg early on Thursday morning.

Provincial traffic spokesman Jacques Mostert said the crash happened at around 2.30am. The bus was travelling along the highway towards Joburg after departing from Cape Town late last night. There were 36 passengers on board.

The bus hit the truck, which was travelling in the opposite direction, head on. The drivers of both vehicles were seriously injured while four people on the bus were killed, including three men and one woman.

Mostert said emergency services had found the bus lying on its side when they arrived at the scene on Thursday morning. Western Cape emergency services spokesman Darren Francis said paramedics rushed five injured men to hospital. The rest of the passengers were treated for minor injuries.

The four killed in the crash were declared dead on the scene.

Francis said the part of the N1 before Laingsburg was a “dangerous stretch of road”. According to the Western Cape Traffic Department, the most dangerous roads in the province are Lansdowne Road between New Eisleben Road and Luzuko Road; Sandkraal Road in George; Louis Fourie Road in Mossel Bay; the N7; the R321 in Grabouw; and the N2 at Nekkies Township, Knysna.
