When accused murder mastermind Shrien Dewani’s case goes before a UK court on Tuesday, it will be to assess his health.

A decision on whether he will be ordered to return to Cape Town is expected to be announced at a later date.

Last week it was announced that Dewani’s extradition case would resume on Tuesday. This prompted a number of people to take to Facebook groups who support his murdered wife Anni Dewani’s family, to say they hoped an announcement on his extradition would be made.

However, on their Facebook page “Anni Hindocha (aka Dewani) – What Really Happened”, Anni’s family have said: “It’s important to note that this is a procedural case management hearing, not the extradition hearing. That will be a further hearing.

“The key issues at the current hearing will be what parameters Judge (Howard) Riddle lays down for monitoring and assessing Dewani’s alleged ‘mental illness’ symptoms.”

According to court papers, Dewani has post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.

Anni’s uncle, Ashok Hindocha, said last week that relatives planned to be present when the two alleged hitmen in the case, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, went on trial in the Western Cape High Court.

Their trial had initially been set down to begin on Monday, but at a pre-trial conference last week it was postponed until August 31 for a psychological report on Mngeni, who has a brain tumour.

South African authorities want Dewani to stand trial with Mngeni and Qwabe.
