Cape Town - A member of the Western Cape legislature has called on residents of Cape Town to step up to the plate and help make the 80th birthday of a well-known Rondebosch flower seller a truly special occasion.

African National Congress MPL Cameron Dugmore made the public appeal ahead of Naomi Ward’s birthday on Monday August 3.

“Naomi Ward, seller of flowers and nicotine at Rondebosch Fountain Centre will be turning 80 on Monday,” Dugmore said. “The ladies from Harrington Laundry and I will be arranging a tea party for her at 8am.”

Dugmore said Ward, who has been selling flowers on a corner of Fountain Centre in Rondebosch since he was a student, was well-known and liked in the community.

“I was student at [the University of Cape Town] from 1982 and have been buying flowers, using the laundry, and dining at Lyra ‘s and its predecessors off and on for over 30 years,” he said.

The idea of the party came about when Dugmore visited the local laundry.

“It all started with the women at the laundry telling me about the 80th and asking me to get a local reporter to take pictures and then, it mushroomed.”

The party-planning team soon decided on a venue, Lyra’s Cafe, and entertainment for the morning’s festivities. The cafe would also provide cake for the occasion.

Now all that was needed were presents and additional partygoers familiar with Ward and her flowers.

Please come if you in the area and bring some cakes, scones, cupcakes, muffins, champagne, and a gift for Naomi, Dugmore urged.

He said he hoped people would join the celebrations on Monday August 3 at 8am.

“Please come if you are in the area and bring some cakes, scones, cupcakes, muffins, champagne, and a gift for Naomi.”
