The MyCiTi bus service will begin servicing Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha on Saturday, the City of Cape Town said.
“The MyCiTi buses will be travelling between these areas and the Civic Centre station in Cape Town, from which passengers will be able to connect to other parts of the city,” transport spokesman Brett Herron said in a statement.
This included Atlantis on the west coast, the Waterfront, or Hout Bay.
The roll-out of the first phase of the N2 Express service to the Cape Flats was only the beginning of an extensive process embarked upon by the city to transform public transport in these areas.
“This is the first milestone of many to come in our endeavours to improve the mobility of residents in the metro south east and to link them to opportunities and amenities across the city,” Herron said.
“This is part of the city's drive to make progress possible, together with our residents.”
With the construction of the MyCiTi station at the Mitchells Plain town centre underway, the design of the Khayelitsha station in Nolungile in site C had also begun.
Another proposed public transport hub would be located in Philippi.
The station at the Mitchells Plain town centre was expected to be operational by the end of the year, while four sets of MyCiTi stops were under construction in Khayelitsha.
Three sets of stops in Khayelitsha were temporary, as to test their location and make changes if needed, before construction commenced for the second phase of the N2 Express service. - Sapa
