Cape Town - The City of Cape Town has confirmed its spend of just over R3 million for Wednesday’s 2015 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier at Cape Town Stadium.

But the city has secured the rights to retain the income from the tickets sold, up to the value of this investment, as part of its rights packages with the SA Football Association (Safa).

Garreth Bloor, mayoral committee member for tourism, events and economic development, said the financial support would include a cash allocation of R1.5m and a contribution of R1.6m to the city’s services and direct stadium costs.

These costs include venue rental, marketing, cleaning and waste removal, safety and security, and the costs of access control, lifts and the use of audio-visual equipment.

Bloor said Safa had agreed to a rights package that would allow the municipality to use the event to promote Cape Town internationally and regionally.

When asked if the city expected a sell-out game, Bloor said: “We would love to see Capetonians come out in their numbers to support Bafana Bafana, armed with their vuvuzelas and full of gees (spirit).”
