Cape Town - The Western Cape Liquor Authority would bring an urgent application to temporarily suspend the licence of a Khayelitsha tavern after eight young women died following a stampede on June 28, Western Cape Economic Opportunities MEC Alan Winde said on Tuesday.

“We are extremely concerned at the allegations of underage persons being present at the premises [Osi’s Place] and the Authority has been investigating these reports,” Winde said in a statement.

“Residents and government need to stand together to take our communities back from the scourge of alcohol abuse. The Western Cape Liquor Authority’s inspectorate conducts regular operations, in conjunction with the SAPS and the City of Cape Town, to ensure that legal outlets adhere to the regulations.”

The women who died were aged between 15 and 23.

Six died on the scene while another two died in a car crash while they were being transported to hospital.

Shortly after the incident liquor authority inspectors visited Osi’s Place and temporarily closed the tavern.

The application to temporarily suspend the liquor licence would be heard on Thursday.
