Cape Town - The parents of two children spotted wandering in De Waal Park in Oranjezicht have not been found.

The girl who has been seen with her younger brother, without food or parental supervision, has not returned to school.

On Monday the Cape Argus reported that the two children, aged 12 and 8, are often seen in the park, and the girl had told a concerned Gardens resident, Elke Wicht, that their mother had instructed them not to go home before 6pm.

Wicht raised the alarm about the children on a social media site and contacted child and welfare services.

However, she said she didn’t get much help.

Jessica Shelver, spokeswoman for Education MEC Debbie Schäfer, said the girl didn’t return to school after the holidays.

The school had been unable to reach the mother, and referred the case to a welfare organisation.

“Our district officials have also referred the case to the school social worker and psychologist.”

It is not clear whether the boy has been enrolled at a school.
