Cape Town - Archbishop Emeritus Desmond Tutu will spend another few days in hospital as doctors keep an eye on a persistent infection.

Last week Tutu was re-admitted to hospital seven days after being discharged, complaining of discomfort.

He underwent a small investigative procedure over the weekend to determine the status of the infection, his foundation said.

The Desmond and Leah Tutu Legacy Foundation said: “

His medical team pronounced themselves satisfied with the progress of his antibiotic treatment.”

His daughter, the Reverend Canon Tutu said he would remain in hospital for further observation and treatment for another few days.

“Although the cancer itself was under control, the infection was a consequence of past treatment that the Archbishop had received for prostate cancer,” she said.

His daughter again thanked everyone for the support the family continues to receive.

“On behalf of the family, we thank everyone at home, on the continent and abroad whose prayers and support have sustained the Archbishop over the past several weeks.”

The family was very touched by the graciousness of the ruling party, opposition parties and President Zuma, who had asked the nation to pray for her father, she said.
