Johannesburg - The opposition to Urban Tolling Alliance (Outa) and SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) have for once united in slamming apparent acts of sabotage levelled at the e-toll central operations centre in Midrand.

For the second time this week, the centre had to be evacuated on Friday following the discovery of yet another white powder suspected to be anthrax. Two people were quarantined.

On Tuesday, the user-pay system was down for a few hours after an envelope with white powder was found.

The impact of this second evacuation was limited to disrupting the call centre only, and all other systems were not affected.

Sanral boss Nazir Alli said the were worried about the impact this kind of behaviour was having on the staff at the centre.

“Those who have chosen to show their dissent by sending these powdery substances to our centre are showing an unfortunate conception of citizenship. They should pause and reflect if they would wish their own family members to be subjected to the anxiety and fear caused to the employees at the centre.”

Outa spokesman John Clarke has urged the public not to overreact. “We hope that these incidents were false alarms.” - Saturday Star
