Durban - Scores of EFF supporters welcomed their leader as they would a pop star at eMhlabeni informal settlement in uMlazi south of Durban.

Clad in the party’s T-shirts, the crowd ululated, danced and sang revolutionary songs as Julius Malema, accompanied by the national spokesman, Mbuyiseni Ndlozi, made his way on to the packed community sports field on Friday night.

He visited the area as part of the party’s Freedom Day Rally, set to be held at John Dube Stadium in Clermont, where he promised to slaughter three cows for his supporters. “We have a date on Monday.

I want all of you to be present at our rally. We will eat izinkomo (cows) for the whole day,” he told the cheering crowd.

The commander-in-chief arrived in the city on Friday and has been addressing various groups. Earlier in the day he spoke to students at the Durban University of Technology and encouraged them to vote out the Student Representative Council and replace it with EFF members.

A member of the party, Lungi Dlomo, said she was very happy to meet the leadership and that Malema was a genuine leader.

“Right now I can’t even talk because I’m over the moon. It’s unbelievable.”
