070510 It is 36cm high, made of solid 18-carat gold, weighs 6.175 kg and is coming to a town near you. Yesterday Nelson Mandela laid his hands on the World Cup trophy, 35 days before the tournament starts and on the eve of the trophy’s tour of the country. From Khayelitsha, outside Cape Town, today, the trophy will embark on the final leg of its world tour. It will be taken to 38 cities and towns across South Africa before returning to Joburg where it will take pride of place at the opening ceremony. During the tour 800 South African fans will get the opportunity to see the prized trophy up close and have their pictures taken with it, but they will not be allowed to touch it. Soccer fans in KZN can be part of the action on the following days: Durban, May 15; Umlazi, May 16; Richards Bay, May 17; and Pietermaritzburg, May 18.
