Johannesburg - A cluster of journalists set up camp outside former president Nelson Mandela's Houghton home on Friday waiting for news of his recovery.

Cameras stood at the ready for any signs of activity from the seemingly quiet residence with its neatly manicured lawn.

The last official word on Mandela was that he is “responding positively” to hospital treatment for a recurring lung infection, presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj said.

The iconic statesman was admitted to an undisclosed hospital just before midnight on Wednesday.

Two cars stopped in the street to take pictures of the house.

One couple roused the interest of a serious-looking police officer who emerged from the home, chatted and laughed briefly with the couple, and then went back inside.

Another young girl posed for a cellphone picture outside the home.
