Vienna - A 14-year-old boy in Austria was remanded in custody Wednesday after telling police he planned to plant a bomb in a public area and join jihadists in Syria, authorities said.

The unnamed boy, a Turkish citizen living in Austria for at least the past eight years, had been under investigation since early October and was arrested on Tuesday, police said.

He told detectives he had “informed himself on the Internet... about making unconventional explosive devices,” police in the eastern city of Sankt Poelten said in a statement.

He made “concrete enquires about buying ingredients” for a bomb and “planned to explode the devices in public places, such as the Vienna Westbahnhof,” a major train station.

The boy also wanted to travel to Syria and fight alongside militants from the Islamic State group, police added.
