Dublin - Northern Ireland police say they have found a large bomb in the back yard of a home in an Irish Republican Army power base in Belfast.
Police evacuated about 30 homes during Thursday night's alert in the Ardoyne district of north Belfast. Members of several IRA factions live in the area.
The Irish nationalist Sinn Fein party condemned those responsible as disconnected from reality. They urged all factions to join the cease-fire observed since 1997 by the major IRA faction, the Provisionals.
The Provisionals renounced violence and disarmed in 2005, but several small IRA splinter groups continue to mount occasional bomb and gun attacks, chiefly targeting police.
Police have described the bomb as “substantial” in size and capable of killing nearby residents. British Army experts safely dismantled it. - Sapa-AP
