London - WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange has asked the highest court in Britain to reopen his appeal against his extradition to Sweden on sexual assault allegations, a spokeswoman for the Supreme Court said on Wednesday.

The Supreme Court ruled on May 30 that the extradition of the 40-year-old Australian on the basis of a European arrest warrant could go ahead.

But his lawyers argued that the Supreme Court judges, who ruled with a majority of five to two, had reached their decision on a legal point not raised during the hearing.

Assange, who denies the allegations brought by two women, has now formally lodged a challenge to that ruling. The Supreme Court gave no indication of when it would give its decision on whether to accept, or dismiss, the request.

A reopening of the appeal would extend further the prolonged legal wrangle, which started with Assange's arrest in London in December 2010.

If Assange loses in the Supreme Court, he can still take his case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France. - Sapa-dpa
