Ukrainian opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko has urged the European Union to meditate in the country's deep political crisis.
“Someone should follow the course of negotiations and mark all commitments and obligations,” Klitschko said after a meeting with EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton late on Tuesday in Kiev.
Klitschko added that Ashton had assured him that the EU is ready to send high-level mediators to negotiations between opposition leaders and the government.
Ashton did not comment immediately on the proposal.
The EU's top diplomat met with Klitschko and fellow parliamentary opposition leaders Arseniy Yatsenyuk and Oleh Tyahnibok on Tuesday.
On Wednesday, she will meet President Viktor Yanukovich.
Yanukovich has faced mass anti-government rallies since he suddenly backed away from a trade agreement with the EU in November and decided to seek closer ties with Russia instead.
The president last week dismissed the government, signed an amnesty law and revoked a series of anti-protest laws, but these concessions have so far failed to placate the protesters, many of whom want early elections.
Klitschko and other opposition leaders are now pressing for constitutional changes that would curb presidential powers. - Sapa-dpa
