A Swiss father of three has gone to the police after it emerged that he was the mystery man seen with a girl who looked like Madeleine McCann in his car days after she vanished in 2007.

Karsten Mayer, 41, said it was his own daughter in the family car.

Karen Sisson, 49, a Briton who lives in Gibraltar, reported to police that she saw a blonde girl identical to Madeleine at a campsite on the Costa del Sol in Spain three days after the British child went missing during a family holiday at Praia da Luz on the Algarve in Portugal.

She said the girl seemed “groggy” and “alienated” from the family she was with. She told police at the time but her report was not followed up.

Mayer, a businessman who lives near the Swiss capital Bern, was traced by journalists using his car number plate. Detectives in Bern say he has “all but” been ruled out of inquiries. - Daily Mail
