A German man was arrested in Thailand for stealing donations at a Buddhist temple, officials confirmed on Saturday.
The suspect was caught on closed-circuit television and a janitor's mobile phone camera stealing from donations in the northern city of Chiang Mai on Friday.
He was homeless and living in the country illegally, according to Police Captain Thanongsak Janjuakwa.
“He had overstayed his visa by 10 months and said that he had been swindled by his Thai wife,” he said.
The suspect will be charged with petty theft and violating migration rules, facing a fine and possible prison time.
According to officials, it was not the first time the man had been caught overstaying his visa. - Sapa-dpa
