London - A video showing a white policeman shooting a black teenager 16 times has been released in the US.

Jason Van Dyke, 37, is seen emptying his gun into Laquan McDonald, 17, even after he falls to the ground.

Chicago police had fought the release of the dash-cam video of the shooting in October last year, but a judge has ruled it should be made public.

Police said at the time Laquan had posed a ‘serious threat’ to officers. But the film shows police pull up in cars and approach the teenager, walking erratically in the street with a knife. Laquan moves away, but Van Dyke opens fire and keeps shooting. He has been charged with murder.

After the video was released, hundreds protested in Chicago. More demonstrations are expected.

The shooting happened months after black 18-year-old Michael Brown was killed by white officer Darren Wilson, in Ferguson, Missouri, sparking widespread disorder.

It is estimated that US police have killed 1 027 people this year.
