Sofia - Bulgarian customs officers at the country’s Kapitan Andreevo checkpoint near the border with Turkey have seized 10.748kg of heroin hidden in a child’s pillow, officials said here on Tuesday.

According to the National Customs Agency (NCA), the officers found the illicit drug in a car, in which from Turkey through Bulgaria to Romania travelled a family with their six-year-old child.

The heroin, split into 20 packets, was hidden in a pillow on which the child was sleeping, NCA said.

Authorities estimated the value of the heroin on the black market would exceed 540 000 US dollars.

The driver of the vehicle, a Turkish citizen, was arrested on the scene.

The Balkan country, a key transit route for drugs smuggled from Asia to Europe, has seized more than one tonne of heroin in 2014.
