Islamabad -

At least 40 militants were killed in air attacks in Pakistan's troubled northwestern tribal region along the Afghan border, the army said on Wednesday.

The latest strikes targeted rebel positions in Nawae Killi and Zaram Asar villages in North Waziristan, where the army launched an operation in June.

In a statement the army said airstrikes killed “40 terrorists” and also destroyed hideouts and ammunition dumps.

The information could not be verified through independent sources as the area is out of reach of the media.

At least 11 militants and three soldiers were killed Tuesday in clashes in North Waziristan.

The army said it killed another 20 militants on Tuesday in air raids in Khyber, another militancy-plagued tribal region.

According to the military, more than 1 000 militants have been killed since the launch of the offensive.

North Waziristan is one of seven tribal districts and was considered as stronghold of al-Qaeda linked militants. - Sapa-dpa
