Islamabad - Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari swore in an interim cabinet on Tuesday in the run-up to general elections scheduled for May 11.

Mir Hazar Khan Khoso, who took over as the caretaker premier on March 25, took a week to handpick the small team that will oversee the polls.

The 14 ministers who took the oath of office in a ceremony broadcast live on state television included prominent journalist Arif Nizami and legal expert Ahmer Bilal Soofi.

Ministerial portfolios were not immediately announced.

While the cabinet has representation from all four provinces, nearly half of its members are from Punjab - the country's most prosperous province and the centre of national politics.

The last premier, Raja Pervez Ashraf, who left office after the government completed its full five-year term in March, had more than 50 members in his cabinet and several advisers with ministerial status. - Sapa-dpa
