New Delhi - The chief minister of the northern state of Uttar Pradesh requested a federal police investigation Saturday into the brutal gang-rape and murder of two girls, the Press Trust of India reported.

State chief minister Akhilesh Yadav recommended the Central Bureau of Investigation probe the crimes against the two cousins, aged 12 and 14, whose bodies were found hanging from a tree Wednesday, as public anger over the deaths mounted.
