New Delhi - India on Friday asked Saudi Arabia to take immediate action against a Saudi employer who allegedly chopped off her Indian maid's arm, terming the incident as “unacceptable”.

“We are very much disturbed over the brutal manner in which the Indian lady has been treated in Saudi Arabia. This is unacceptable. We have taken this up with Saudi authorities. Our embassy is in touch with the victim,” Indian External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj tweeted.

Fifty-eight-year-old Kashturi Munirathinam's right arm was cut off by her Saudi employer late on Tuesday night while she was trying to escape from the house.

The employer reportedly resorted to such a brutal act after the victim complained of torture against her to Saudi authorities.

A native of the southern state of Tamil Nadu, the woman is currently recovering at a hospital in Saudi capital and her family members have urged the Indian government to help her bring back home.

She had gone to Saudi Arabia just three months ago.
