London - British Prime Minister David Cameron on Friday welcomed a unanimous adoption of the UN Security Council Resolution on defeating the Islamic State (IS).
The UN Security Council on Friday voted unanimously to adopt a resolution that calls on all countries to coordinate efforts to prevent further terrorist attacks by the IS and similar groups.
“Today, the world has united against IS,” Cameron said in a statement, describing the adoption as “an important moment.”
“The international community has come together and has resolved to defeat this evil, which threatens people of every country and every religion,” he added.
Cameron noted that apart from unanimously backing action against “this evil death cult in both Syria and Iraq,” the UN Security Council reiterated its determination to secure a political solution to the conflict in Syria.
“Today's vote shows beyond doubt the breadth of international support for doing more in Syria and for decisive action to eradicate IS,” he said, adding that Britain will continue to support its allies who are fighting IS in Syria.
“I will continue to make the case for us to do more and to build support in Parliament for the action that I believe is necessary for Britain to take to protect our own security, as part of a determined international strategy,” Cameron said.
British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said, “The horrific attacks in Paris have stiffened the resolve of the international community to defeat IS, whose acts of terror in Europe and the Middle East aim to challenge our basic values and way of life.”
“The United Nations Security Council has demonstrated the unity of the international community in working to defeat IS,” he said.
“We must all act by continuing to cut off its finance, severing its access to oil and stemming the flow of foreign fighters, in addition to the military action we are taking against this evil ideology. IS's murderous violence requires a strong security response,” he urged.
Hammond stressed that when necessary, Britain would strike “against those who pose a threat to the UK, and our people and interests.”
