“A MOMENT of silence for all those who never got to see 5/5” read a tweet sent a few hours after One Direction band member Zayn Malik announced on Wednesday that he was quitting the British pop boy band.

The announcement caused a major upset among Directioners in the country after it was made only a few days before the previously five-member band was due to land in the country for shows in Joburg over the weekend and in Cape Town next Wednesday.

Zayn quit the band just days after he abandoned the current world tour last week, going back home to recuperate from stress.

He would have rejoined the popular outfit for the South African tour, and the announcement that he had pulled out broke many hearts.

But from fans of the group, who won tickets from the Pretoria News for Sunday’s FNB Stadium show, he is just a party spoiler who would not dampen their mood.

Pretoria North mother Patience Mashilini is taking her 10-year-old daughter Makuke to the show, and yesterday the pair could barely contain their excitement at the opportunity to watch the four young men live in concert.

“This is huge, so huge. It will be a first for both of us, so it will give us an opportunity to explore this world for the first time.”

Makuke explained that she would be wearing 1D gear for the show, and she said: “I love the group very much. I cannot believe I will actually get to watch them live during their first-ever performance in the country.”

Fifteen-year-old Alice Herbst is taking her 18-year-old cousin Sabrina Watt, and while the girls were yet to go shopping for their 1D outfits, Alice said she was ready to become a serious groupie and fit in with the throngs of fans expected to fill up the stadium.

“I am a huge fan. I know almost all the songs and I just can’t wait to go there,” the teen said.

For both winners, Zayn had been part of a bigger group, but in his absence the show would go on.

If Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson were there, if the thousands of music lovers turned up, and if the event was as electrifying as it promised to be, Makuke and her mom, Alice and Sabrina would have the time of their lives.
