London - Dogs may actually have been man’s best friend for 40 000 years – more than twice as long as was thought.

Most scientists believed man first domesticated dogs from wild wolves 16 000 years ago.

Over time, the domesticated animals became genetically different to wild wolves. But Swedish Museum of Natural History experts now say this split in the species may have occurred far earlier after dating a domesticated wolf bone from Siberia to 33 000BC.

They estimate wolves were domesticated 5 000 years before.
