London - Tradition has it his body was cut to bits after he was killed by an arrow in the eye at the Battle of Hastings.

But nearly 1 000 years on, a search is being carried out for the remains of King Harold at a church in Waltham Abbey, Essex. The project will be charted by Oval Films, which also helped to find Richard III’s remains in a car park in Leicester.

It will follow author Peter Burke, who has spent years trying to prove Harold died 30 years after 1066 and was buried at the Abbey Church of Waltham Holy Cross and St Lawrence.

A ground-penetrating radar will be used near the east wall – built in 1090 – of the former abbey. The wall has “significant” symbols engraved on it.

Mr Burke said: “If we find the remains of a man in his late-70s with scarring to his temple from a battle wound then we need to do a DNA test.

“Our understanding of this period of history would have to change.” - Daily Mail
