Rome - New eruptions and a seven-kilometre-high plume of ash were reported from Mount Etna off the Italian island of Sicily on Sunday.

Italian media said a stream of lava emitted from the volcano flowed into the uninhabited valley of Valle del Bove.

This is the volcano's fourth active phase this year. At 3,350 metres, Etna is Europe's tallest and most active volcano.

Nearby airports continued operations during the eruption, though authorities shut down two nearby flight routes. - Sapa-dpa
