London - It may not have felt like a scorcher, but according to US government scientists, July was the world’s hottest month in recorded history.

Data from the country’s National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has shown that the average global temperature in July was 0.81C (1.46F) warmer than the 20th-century July average.

The month also ended up being the world’s hottest since modern global temperature records began in 1880. July’s average land and sea temperature across the globe was 16.61C (61.89F), narrowly beating the previous monthly record, which was set in July 2011, researchers at NOAA’s National Centre for Environmental Information revealed.

The US government agency pointed out that 2014 currently stands as the hottest year since scientists started recording precise world temperatures using instruments.

But they said this year could end up being even warmer – as the world’s average temperature between January and July has already exceeded the previous world record for that period, which was set in 2010.
