London - Mussels could be under threat as climate change makes the world’s oceans more acidic, academics warned.

This cuts the strength of minerals needed to create their shells, making them more brittle, said Glasgow University.

Yields for the shellfish industry could be hit, added a report in Royal Society journal Interface.

But, it said, mussels may have an in-built mechanism which boosts shell growth when water temperatures rise by 2C. - Daily Mail
