Johannesburg - Saturday sees the annual Earth Hour – and an advertising agency has come up with a list of “Things to do in the dark”.

Accompanied by a TV commercial, print ads and an interactive Facebook tab, the campaign created by Ogilvy & Mather (O&M) Cape Town for the Worldwide Fund for Nature is centred around celebrating Earth Hour in a fun way, making it an initiative that is accessible and something that all South Africans can get involved in.

Jacques Massardo, creative director at O&M Cape Town, said people knew about Earth Hour and what it stood for, but seemed to lack motivation to participate.

“Instead of Earth Hour feeling like a bit of a chore when we all sit in the dark for an hour without being able to do much, we wanted to make it more of a calendar event,” he said. “Our campaign encourages people to participate on the evening, either by doing something in the dark at home with friends and family, or by going to dinner in the dark, or attending a function in the dark at a participating restaurant or event partner.”

WWF has teamed up with a number of partners, both locally and nationally, that will all offer activities to do in the dark from 8.30pm to 9.30pm, from candlelit dinners to unplugged music concerts – making sure that there is something for everyone. Also see WWF-SA’s Facebook page. – The Star
