London - An “anti-ageing pill” which could allow people to live to 120 is being developed in Russia, it was claimed.

Scientists are currently testing the drug – which they say has managed to delay the start of the ageing process – on rats, mice, fish and dogs.

Dr Maxim Skulachev, of Moscow State University, said: “A lot of ageing diseases developed much slower.”

His team is using “a new type of antioxidant” to target the energy-producing mitochondria in cells – which are linked to ageing and potentially diseases such as Alzheimer’s.

The scientists have studied the naked mole-rat of East Africa, an animal which is renowned for longevity and appears to be immune to cancer.

Dr Skulachev told Russian newspaper Moskovsky Komsomolets that a “realistic” aim for the human life span was around 120 years. “It will be possible to postpone old age,” he added. - Daily Mail
