London - There are an average of 9 000 different species of germs and fungi living in our homes, according to researchers.

They said most of the 2 000 different types of fungi were brought in from outside the home, meaning it is possible decipher its location according the ecosystem inside.

Meanwhile they could tell whether a house was all-male or all-female and whether there were pets present by examining the mix of 7 000 bacteria.

Dr Noah Fierer, who carried out the study of 1 200 US households at the University of Colorado, said: “It was surprising to us that [having a pet] was such a strong influence – stronger than any other factor, than where your home was located or the design of your home.”
