London - A meteorite has crashed to earth close to an airport in Central America.

Its impact created a 39ft-wide crater in woodland near the Nicaraguan capital Managua and was felt throughout the city.

Locals heard an explosion at around midnight on Sunday and said liquid, sand and dust were blown through the air, which smelled like something had burned. No one was injured.

Scientists believe the meteorite may have splintered from the 2014 RC “pitbull” asteroid that passed very close to Earth on Sunday.

Nasa had estimated the asteroid to be approximately 65ft wide, or roughly the size of a house.

Its distance from Earth – about 25 000 miles, closer than some TV satellites – prompted astronomers to call it a “very, very close call”.

The impact was so large that it registered on the instruments used to measure earthquakes. - Daily Mail
