Peak

Is your brain feeling a little sluggish? Looking for something a little less mindless to do on your phone? Try Peak, an app with games designed to help you focus. Similar to other App Store hits such as Lumosity and Elevate, Peak contributes to the genre with games to help improve your memory, mental agility and concentration. Users set goals for how much and how often they want to train.

Users can pay for the “Pro” version of the app, which grants them access to more games and deeper analysis of their performance. It's important not to take the “brain fitness” claims too seriously; research on how much these kinds of things help you can vary. Still, it's more brain-tickling than a game of Candy Crush. Free, for iOS and Android.

Boomerang

It's a gif world, and we're just living in it. Those short, looping (often loopy) animated files pop up just about everywhere on the Web and in social media. Now, it's easier than ever to make them yourself. Instagram's new app, Boomerang, makes it very easy to make your own 1-second gifs for sharing on Instagram, Facebook and your phone's camera roll.

The process couldn't be simpler. Just find something moving that you want to shoot, hit the capture button and keep as still as you can for a second or so. You can shoot from either rear-facing or front-facing camera. To work, the app will need permission to access those cameras, as well as your phone's storage. Free, for iOS and Android. – Washington Post
